7 Chalk Paint Techniques That Will Instantly Transform Old Furniture

Chalk paint has completely changed the way DIYers and furniture artists approach makeovers. Whether you’re rescuing a roadside find or freshening up a hand-me-down, this paint makes it easy to achieve stunning results- no professional tools or experience required. In this post, I'm sharing 7 of my favourite chalk paint techniques that can completely transform any piece. From soft, subtle finishes to bold, layered looks, there’s something here for every style and skill level. Grab your brush- we’re about to turn that tired piece into a statement.
What You’ll Need
Before diving into the techniques, make sure you’re stocked with a few chalk paint basics.
Here’s what I recommend keeping on hand:
- Chalk Paint ( check out my favourite brand here)
- Quality brushes - synthetic or natural bristles
- Degreaser ( my go-to product)
- Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
- Clear or dark wax ( for sealing and aging effects)
- Soft cloth or wax brush
- Drop cloth and painter's tape
Once you’re prepped, it's time to try out some transformative techniques that will take your pieces from basic to beautiful.
Smooth Modern Finish
Perfect for a clean, minimalist look. Use a flat synthetic brush and apply thin, even coats. Sand lightly between coats for a smooth surface.
Dry Brushing for Texture
Dip just the tip of your brush in paint, dab off excess, and lightly drag it across the surface. Great for rustic, aged pieces that need some personality.
Two-Colour Layering
Start with a base coat, then dry brush or lightly apply a second colour. Sand edges for a peek-through effect. Ideal for a farmhouse or vintage vibe.
Distressing for a Vintage Look
Paint, then lightly sand corners, edges, and high-touch areas to mimic natural wear. Use fine-grit sandpaper for a subtle touch.
Wax Sealing: Clear & Dark
Clear wax protects your piece while enhancing the colour. Dark wax adds age, depth, and drama- especially on textured details. Tip: Always use a clear wax before applying a dark one.
Colour Blending for Depth
Use a damp brush or sponge to blend two tones on the surface while still wet. You can also use a mist bottle to better control the paint. This technique takes practice but creates a beautiful, custom finish.
Paint Wash Technique
Thin your paint with water and apply it like a stain. Wipe off excess to reveal wood grain. This method is perfect for raw wood and for keeping the light colour after stripping/ sanding your project. Watch one of my videos here.
Tips for Choosing Colours:
- Light neutrals= timeless
- Bold tones = statement pieces
- Layering= depth and dimension
The magic of chalk paint is in its simplicity and versatility. Don't be afraid to experiment—your next masterpiece might be hiding in the basement or your garage.
